
The Round 2 of the QSL Cup, played on Thursday, 11th October, and Saturday, 13th October, witnessed some exciting clashes.
In Group A, Al Kharaitiyat defeated Al Arabi 2-0, while the other two games were drawn, with Qatar SC holding Umm Salal 0-0 and reigning champions Al Gharafa playing out a 1-1 draw with Al Duhail on Thursday.
In Group B, Al Ahli blanked Al Sailiya 2-0, Al Rayyan defeated Al Sadd 8-0 and Al Khor beat Al Shahania 2-1 on Saturday.
Al Kharaitiyat thus opened their account and moved up from the fifth position in the group to third with three points.
Umm Salal stayed second with four points behind Al Duhail, who also have the same number of points and goal difference but were placed ahead having scored more number of goals (three as against Umm Salal’s one.
Qatar SC slipped from third to fifth spot having drawn both their matches.
Romanian midfielder Valentin Lazar played a key role in Al Kharaitiyat’s victory. He got on to scoresheet after Majid Salmeen put them ahead.
The match between Qatar SC and Umm Salal failed to produce a goal though both teams came close to it, but for the wasted opportunities.
Al Gharafa were lucky to secure a last-gasp equaliser against Al Duhail.
Al Gharafa earned a valuable point as they were rewarded for their good efforts in the second half.
Young Fahad Al Buyati took Al Duhail ahead early on before Abdulghani Muneer helped Al Gharafa draw parity in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
In Group B, Al Ahli registered their first victory, with Ali Ferydoon and Meshaal Abdulla scoring in either half.
The win enabled Al Ahli to climb from fifth to third position, while the second successive defeat saw Al Sailiya slip from fourth to fifth spot.
Al Rayyan displaced Al Sadd from the top of the table to fourth spot with a big win. Brazilian striker Lucca Borges netted a hat-trick and captain Rodrigo Tabata two goals.
Mohammed Juma, Ahmad Mohamed Al Sayyid and Aldoukali Side were the other scorers.
Al Rayyan and Al Khor both have six points, but the former are ahead on goal difference (+11 as against +2).
Al Rayyan dominated the proceedings as Al Sadd fielded a youthful side without the likes of Xavi Hernandez, Baghdad Bounedjah, Hassan Al Haydous and Akram Afif.
Al Khor scored goals in quick succession through Ahmed Al Askar and Diego Da Silva to put it across against Al Shahania, who pulled one back late through Saoud Mohammed Al Khallaqi.
Al Shahania stayed rooted to the bottom of the group without any point.
A total of 17 goals were scored compared to the opening round’s tally of 15.
