Al Sailiya and Umm Salal were locked in a goalless draw in the final round (Week 22) of 2019-20 season QNB Stars League at the Al Sadd Stadium on Thursday.

Al Sailiya and Umm Salal finished their campaigns with 29 and 18 points respectively.

Umm Salal were the gainers as they ensured a 10th-place finish, ahead of Al Khor and Al Shahania, and thus avoided going into play-off with the Second Division runners-up.

Al Sailiya, being coached by Tunisian Sami Trabelsi for long, ended up with eight wins, five draws and nine defeats. The Peregrines, who achieved their best-ever finish in the league when they came third last season, could not finish among the top four this time around.

Umm Salal recorded three wins, nine draws and 10 defeats this season. The Orange Fortress once even occupied the bottom position, but showed remarkable improvement ever since Moroccan Aziz Ben Askar, himself their former defender, took charge of the side.

Chances were more or less equal for both teams even though Al Sailiya had more of the ball.

In the first half, Al Sailiya’s Mohammed Mudather’s rising shot hit goalkeeper Baba Malick’s hand and crossbar before sailing over, while Umm Salal’s Ismail Mohammed’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Amine Lecomte.

Ismail Mohammed was unlucky in the second half as well, his header going over the horizontal.

For Al Sailiya, substitute Mashaal Al Shammari’s header off a corner kick crashed against the crossbar.

Al Sailiya had beaten Umm Salal 2-0 in the first leg.
