Al Wakrah held newly-crowned QNB Stars League champions Al Sadd to a 1-1 draw in Week 19 at the Al Sadd Stadium on Thursday.
Rodrigo Tabata took Al Sadd ahead by scoring in the 25th minute. Al Wakrah found the equaliser through Khalid Muneer in the 83rd minute.
Al Sadd extended their unbeaten run and now have 51 points, whereas Al Wakrah moved on to 19 points.
Al Sadd, who won the Qatar league championship for a record-extending 15th time last weekend after beating Umm Salal 3-0 in Week 18, took the field by resting their mainstays.
Instead, The Wolves started the game with their second string compared to Al Wakrah’s full-strength line-up. Goalkeeper Saad Al Dossari played his first league game after his return from injury layoff.
Possession was almost even in the first half as both teams had their chances. In fact, Al Sadd scored off their brightest chance during the session.
Young Yousef Abdulrazaq led Al Sadd’s attack, assisted by experienced Tabata. And both combined in the scoring act, with Tabata finishing a move made by Yousef along the left flank with a placing shot, beating a host of Al Wakrah defenders and goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater.
Yousef headed wide from a Tabata free-kick and then sent his shot over the bar.
At the other end, Khalid Muneer, Abdulghani Muneer and Mohamed Benyettou made attempts at the Al Sadd goal, unsuccessfully.
Khalid Muneer’s shot went wide with a headed deflection by Al Sadd’s Ahmed Suhail, Abdulghani Muneer’s volley was blocked by Al Dossari and Benyettou hit his shot against the crossbar even as the goalkeeper was beaten.
Al Wakrah tried hard to draw parity in the second half. Omar Ali’s left-footer was cleared by the Al Sadd defence for a corner in the 56th minute.
Al Sadd almost doubled their lead in the 69th minute, but Nam Tae-Hee cracked his shot against the right upright.
Al Wakrah finally equalised through Khalid Muneer, whose low shot went in off the hands of Al Dossari.
Al Sadd had beaten Al Wakrah 4-1 in the first leg of 2020-21 season QNB Stars League.
