The Korean box-to-box midfielder set a new QSL record for the highest distance covered in a single match (in the last 4 seasons). Prozone, the League’s sole statistical provider revealed that Kook Han Young ran an incredible 14 km in the Round 11 clash away at Al Wakrah.
Box-to-box
In general, midfielders rack up the most distance on the pitch as they often have to cover the most ground, but even by their very high standards, the Korean certainly out did himself this time!
Average distance in QSL this season
So far this season the average distance covered for midfielders in the QSL is about 11 km so that gives us an indication of the work rate of the Korean midfielder.
Football
Football consists of a large physiological demand on the human body. Muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, speed, quickness, agility, power, flexibility… The list goes on and on. However, often we think of soccer as a predominantly aerobic sport. Whereas in reality, it is the opposite.
In addition the average QSL midfielder makes 37 lung busting sprints, not to mention the explosive leaps into the air and the lunging tackles. All of which are done with very little recovery time. Therefore when a player comes off the field of play having run 11 or 12 km, it actually feels more like 25 km!
Kook Han Young’s distance covered in the round 11 clash is similar to him jogging all the way from his Club in Al Dafna to the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence on the outskirts of Doha.
