QSL online caught up with Al Wakrah’s vice president Abdullah Saqr in an exclusive interview to talk about the clubs 2015/2016 campaign and the plans for the side ahead of the new 2016/2017 QSL season which will kick-off on the 16th of September.
Opening the interview, Saqr gave his assessment of Wakrah’s season in which the Blue Waves finshed in tenth place in the QSL standings. “Ultimately we did not achieve our aim of improving in the QSL standings, we were battling relegation for some time but eventually we got safe with a few games to spare.”
Saqr also pointed to some key moments in the season which affected Wakrah’s fortunes in the QSL; “I think that as a side we had bad luck with injuries over the course of the season. Also the absence of Rúben Amorim from suspension after being sent off twice also had an impact on our performances.”
Talk also turned to the professional players who represented Wakrah this term, and Saqr had an update on the player’s contract situations. “Both Ali Rehema and Mouhcine Moutouali will remain with the club whilst Rúben Amorim will leave for Portugal. We are also still negotiating with Sebastian Saez.”
When pushed on the negotiations with Wakrah’s top scorer this season, Saqr was clear that nothing had been confirmed regarding the future of the Argentine striker. “We have yet to come to an agreement after negations with Sasha. We are set to sit down soon again for a solution for this. If we cannot come to an agreement we will find a replacement and speak with head coach Mauricio Larriera to find the best possible replacement.”
Saqr also confirmed that the club is set to announce its preseason training plans in the next coming weeks; “We are looking at a number of options including Italy, Germany and Spain. This will be decided by senior management with the input of the coaching staff.”
Saqr concluded his chat with QSL online with a look to the future of Al Wakrah and their aims for the new QSL season; “I think that for Al Wakrah we will be looking to improve our standing in the league and deliver stronger performances. We believe that we need to have a strong preseason with the squad and manager and believe we will be able to improve further next season.”
