El Arabi or Msakni? Who will top ’em all?

The battle for the top-scorer award in the 2017-18 season QNB Stars League has become one between two Youssefs — new champions Al Duhail’s Youssef El Arabi and Youssef Msakni.

Will it be El Arabi again this season? Or will Msakny bag the coveted award? Those questions are doing the rounds as the tournament is drawing to a close, with the penultimate-round action being scheduled for Saturday, 17th March.

El Arabi had won the award last season with 24 goals, followed Al Sadd’s Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah on 23.

The Moroccan spearhead is currently leading the list with 24 goals, with Msakny close behind on 23.

El Arabi has been leading the list right from the beginning, while Tunisian attacking midfielder Msakny made a big surge recently with some outstanding performances.

Both players have underlined their scoring abilities and stand apart from the rest of the pack, according to the facts and figures released by STATS, the official statistics and figures provider for the QNB Stars League.

The duo made significant contributions to The Red Knights’ QNB Stars League triumph, with an unbeaten run so far and two rounds of games remaining, by notching up 47 of the total 77 goals scored by them, the most by any team. Al Sadd are second on 59 goals.

Msakny scored two goals and El Arabi one in Al Duhail’s 5-0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat last week.

Al Duhail’s remaining matches are against Al Markhiya and Al Sailiya, and either of them is almost sure to have the last laugh as third-placed Abderrazaq Hamdallah of Al Rayyan has only 17 goals to his credit.

Bounedjah, who missed many matches due to a nagging injury, is fourth with 14 goals, followed by Al Rayyan’s Rodrigo Tabata, Al Kharaitiyat’s Rachid Tiberkanine (both 12), Al Sadd’s Hassan Al Haydous, Al Sailiya’s Wagner Ribeiro (both 11), Al Sadd’s Jugurtha Hamroun and Al Khor’s Madson (both 10).
